The Courage To Try Changed Everything
An interview with Hafizah, the one who never stopped learning.
1. What first brought you through the doors? What were you looking for at that point in your life?
I was a trainee at Bold At Work during NYC Digital Traineeship 2020. I pivoted from graphic design into project coordination and programme design. Bold At Work looked like a great place to start anew, so I went ahead.
2. What actually happened when you were here? Share one specific moment, conversation, or experience that stayed with you.
I started as a trainee digital designer then was given the opportunity to learn programme design followed by project coordination. All of which were new skills for me that later became a growing interest.
3. What did you take with you after leaving?
I have had plenty of lessons and advice since my departure from Bold At Work. One of the best attitudes was to confidently ask for what I want. For someone who was taught to just accept what was given and to not ask for more, such a thing seemed like a radical move. During my time, I've been asked to sit in meetings purely out of interest and curiosity, asked to learn a new skill or be involved in an opportunity. I still practise this even after I left.
4. Where are you now, and how is that connected (if at all)?
I am currently a freelance trainer within the education space, running self development and visual arts workshop, both of which are my interests. On the side, I am part of a creative-led ground up initiative, engaging the youth community with art events. I would not have taken up these endeavours if not for the experiences and lessons I learnt in Bold At Work. Collaborating and connecting with others on a shared vision, aligned values within a safe and brave space for all to be authentically ourselves. Throughout my interactions with the various partners while working in Bold, it was living proof to me that what you envision is possible, if you are bold enough to try.
5. If the space did not exist, what would have been different?
If the space at 319 did not exist, I would have missed how interconnected we really are through the good work each community partner-neighbour is doing, collectively becoming one village supporting each other. In the past, I limited work to office buildings in a business district, not actively engaging with those outside and not witnessing the outcomes from the work I do that eventually impact them. But working at blk 319 has expanded my views. By interacting with others in/nearby the space, From collaborating with the health care professionals and seniors at the opposite active ageing centre to seeing neighbours enjoying Parking Day at the parking lot, I felt more committed to the work that contributes to the nearby community.
