Girlhood, Growth, and Grit at Bold
An Interview with Fatmah, the intern with hopes and dreams waiting to be realised.
Middle of picture- Fatmah in action!
1. What first brought you through the doors? What were you looking for at that point in your life?
I was searching for an internship that balanced purpose with the opportunity to grow my skills and have creative liberty.
To me, "purpose" meant working within the social sector.
regarding my skills: I wanted to be creative and finally have the chance to write pieces.
and for liberty: I needed a space where I could share openly.
bold offered exactly those three things!
There wasn't much holding me back, although the distance was a factor... yet the concept of an innovative, open studio located right at a void deck was so cool that it drew me in.
2. What actually happened when you were here? Share one specific moment, conversation, or experience that stayed with you.
There were so many girlhood moments shared here. Planning for Parking Day stands out as a core memory because it was my first time organizing an event and sourcing parklet owners; honestly, pulling that off at nineteen felt surreal!
To this day, the forest bathing and Jurong trail remain some of my most cherished experiences—I still keep the photos! Forest bathing at Labrador Park was particularly meaningful; I was dealing with a difficult breakup, but the experience lifted my spirits in a way I didn't expect, especially since I usually dislike being out in the sun.
The Jurong trail was truly beautiful because of the residents we met from all walks of life. Visiting the rental blocks and seeing the MRT pass by felt like a scene from a Studio Ghibli film... it made me realize that life isn't always about the complexities, but the simple things.
Within this space, I grew as an individual in two key ways. First, as a woman—being part of an all-female team was incredibly encouraging and provided a safe environment even for an intern. Second, as a professional; I mastered the art of multitasking, which has deeply influenced my work ethics. Juggling two roles here prepared me to do the same in my subsequent career.
This space was truly where I learned to expand my connections! 🥹 I almost forgot the Bold Wall! This space allowed me to leave my mark, especially when planning that wall with Hafizah. So many cool things happened here.
3. What did you take with you after leaving?
Definitely work ethics Friendships. My love for writing,
4. Where are you now, and how is that connected (if at all)?
Currently, I am serving as a civil servant in the role of an English kindergarten teacher.
Reflecting on my journey, JuraSEEK was a pivotal influence. Stepping into the role of a facilitator provided me with foundational skills that are directly applicable to my professional path today.
5. If the space did not exist, what would have been different?
Since it was covid, if the space wasn't there, i guess i would've been deprived of being efficient 🤣
