Where Experimentation Felt Safe And Possible
An interview with Katrina, one of our OG interns in the early days
1. What first brought you through the doors? What were you looking for at that point in your life?
Wow! It’s been so long (2017) , I believe I was looking for a meaningful internship opportunity for me to experiment with design and social media marketing before my university started.
2. What actually happened when you were here? Share one specific moment, conversation, or experience that stayed with you.
As a complete design and marketing newbie, I was given a lot of grace and encouragement to experiment while doing my best to contribute. I was really thankful to be given that opportunity.
One experience that stuck with me was being part of the first few workshops, most of which focused on “creating” and “making” e.g. concrete planters, architectural design. Simply DOING was so liberating and a breath of fresh air, instead of thinking all the time — a muscle we spend a lot of time building in school.
At that point in time, I received what I needed — an affirmation that we can create and do without needing perfection or overthinking things. A space where beautiful friendships emerged, supportive mentors encouraged growth and a creative space to CREATE from within.
3. If the space did not exist, what would have been different? What might you have struggled with, delayed, or missed?
While my internship at BOLD@319 was short lived, it’s only with my return to freelance and being part of Bold again that I really see and appreciate this gracious space for experimentation and creation. I don’t think we have a lot of such spaces in Singapore that provide a safe and supportive platform or even launchpad for youth. It makes a huge difference in how we see and interact with the world. And I’m thankful I got to encounter and experience this space in my growing years, and that I now get to hold that space for others :))
